30 July 2010 - Office for Civil Society Announces 11 Million Pound Cuts for the Voluntary Sector

The Government has announced its cost cutting measures for the sector, including a reduction in funding for v and Capacitybuilders.

The £11 million cutbacks include:

· £5 million from the v match fund as well as a £1.95 million reduction from their overall allocation of £39 million.

· £1.3 million from Capacitybuilders programme.

· £2 million in unallocated funds from the Office for Civil Society budget.

· £0.4 million from the Commission for the Compact.

Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude, and the Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, have published an open letter to the sector urging organisations to offer their ideas for reducing the deficit and finding innovative new ways of working.

Civil Society Minister Nick Hurd said:

“We know that it is local people and organisations on the ground that often know what needs changing and we want to tap into their knowledge and experience to help us identify ways of doing things better and more efficiently so we can do more for less.

“The voluntary, community and social enterprise sector do really important and much valued work on the front line delivering services and that is why they are best placed to identify what the state does well and what could be improved. On my visits to organisations many people working in the sector have already shared with me their ideas and now I’m opening up the challenge to the whole sector.”
