Getting Ready for Contracting in Worcestershire

Overall aim
To prepare voluntary and community organisations in Worcestershire for the introduction of contracting in October 2007
The Modules
A series of four modules each lasting half a day. Each module is free standing, or can be attended in combination with any or all other modules.
Module 1 – The contracting process (9:30am to 12:45pm)
An outline of the different elements and processes that make up contracting and advice on how organisations can influence the process. The session will focus on:
• Types of contracts
• The overall process
• Specifications
• Tenders
• Legal issues and constraints
Module 2 – Costing and bidding for contracts (1:30pm to 4:30pm)
This module will help participants to prepare and bid for contracts. It will develop an understanding of what goes into a bid and highlight good practice. It will also encourage participants to identify what added value they contribute to a service or project. Content will include:
• Fully costing a service/project
• What goes into a tender?
• Writing a bid
• Showing added value
Module 3 – Making an agreement (9:30am to 12:30pm)
This practical session will focus on what goes into an agreement. Cases studies will be used to outline the main headings of an agreement. The session will identify common problem areas and suggest how they can be tackled. The session will also outline effective strategies for negotiating with purchasers. Content will include:
• What goes into an agreement?
• Common problem areas
• Risk and management issues
• Effective negotiating
Module 4 – Developing your organisation for contracts (1:30pm to 4:30pm)
This module will look at what voluntary organisations need to do to plan and prepare themselves for contracts. It will identify some of the key changes and issues organisations may have to face. It will also look at how organisations can co-operate and also be proactive about commissioning and contracting. Content will include:
• Being ready for contracts
• Strategic and business planning issues
• Models for organisations to work together
• Taking the initiative
Cost:
The modules are free, but a £10 fee will be charged for non-attendance on the day, without prior notice.
