HEALTH IMPROVEMENT FUND

The Health Improvement Fund was established in July 2008, to help meet tough new targets negotiated between government and the Worcestershire Partnership, which is a partnership of organisations that provide services to Worcestershire residents. These include NHS Worcestershire, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Worcestershire County Council, who have all contributed money to the fund.

The targets are to:
• Increase adult participation in sport
• Reduce the number of people admitted to hospital because of injuries caused by alcohol
• Reduce obesity among primary school children
• Increase the opportunities for young people to take part in positive activities
• Reduce the number of under 18’s falling pregnant
• Reduce the number of deaths from circulatory diseases amongst under 75s
• Reduce the number of people who smoke

Up to £75,000 is available to individual organisations for projects that help to deliver these targets, which are set out in Worcestershire’s Local Area Agreement (LAA). The LAA is an agreement between government and the Worcestershire Partnership that lasts from 2008 to 2011 and aims to target resources on those issues that are a priority at the local and national level.

The third and final round of the Fund will open for bids at the End of November 2009, with a closing date of 4pm, Friday 29 January 2010. To coincide with the launch of Round 3 a workshop will be held on Monday 30 November at Diglis House Hotel, 10:30-12:00, Severn Street, Worcester, WR1 2NE. The workshop will provide you with information on the vision of the Fund; eligibility and decision making criteria; our priorities for Round 3; how to apply and detail of projects supported to date.

We are particularly interested in receiving applications for projects that will target those areas of the county (Health Hotspots) where health is poorest and for projects that will focus on
• Teenage pregnancy
• Alcohol Support Services
• Healthy lifestyle activities for older people

Health ‘hotspots’ in the county include:
• Oldington and Foley Park and Greenhill and Broadwaters in Wyre Forest
• Pickersleigh in Malvern
• Westlands in Wychavon
• Old Warndon, Gorse Hill and Rainbow Hill, Dines Green, Cathedral and Nunnery in Worcester
• Winyates, Greenlands, Church Hill and Abbey, Batchley and Central in Redditch
• Charford and Sidemoor in Bromsgrove
